Protect your castle with a personalised shield. Learn about medieval times through play. Begin with shields, and then prepare for siege! We've made a standard heater shield, but you can try making a kite shield, too.

Draw a template out of stiff card or paper so you can cut out numerous shield shapes that will be exactly the same size. Alternatively, just draw your shape directly onto the Zote Foam and cut along the drawn guideline.

Then make two sets of parallel cuts (in the positions shown in Step 3) so you can thread a long piece of string. This will enable you to hold your shield and defend yourself from your enemies!

Choose a piece of string (or a few!) and thread it through the holes, securing it with a knot.

Now it’s time to decorate your shield! Choose a different colour of Zote Foam to make some panels; you’ll need four if you make one like ours. However, you could just make a shield with a diagonal stripe or add a fabric circle painted gold. Whatever you make, glue it in place so it’s secure. It’s going to get a bashing.

We’ve then cut out some symbols from a different, contrasting, colour. You could try lions, crowns, sceptres, or maybe go for a Templar design? Place your designs on top and glue these in place, too.

You’re finished. Prepare for battle!

 Tip!

Get the class involved with this great legend and ask them to bring in a jam jar each so they can create their own Salmon of Knowledge scene!
